Mokita Grit Youth Theatre

Mokita Grit Youth Theatre
Community In London

Mission Statement:

Run and taught by professional theatre practitioners, Mokita Grit Youth Theatre will work with students aged 8-12, developing confidence, teamwork and community. Students will gain invaluable performance and people skills to enable them to become creative and consummate lovers of life. Emphasis here is on company; we aim to create small pockets of communities throughout London, engaging not only with our students, but also their schools, homes and peer groups.

How will we implement our aims?

Starting with one company of students aged 8-12 we will run three weekly three-hour sessions for 20-25 children as "taster-sessions" allowing both students and parents to discover what we are offering without any obligation.
Following these "taster-sessions", we will establish a permanent group of students who will attend regular weekly classes and begin to create a community.
Classes will be run by professionals currently working in the theatre industry, and is spearheaded by experienced youth worker Ben Murray-Watson under the guidance of Mokita Grit Productions. This structure will enable significant connection with the industry and create opportunities for children to be involved in, and learn more about, current theatre.
Each session will be tailored to the children in the company, and will specifically encourage cooperation and teamwork, building trust and collaboration.
All classes will be run by a leader and an assistant; allowing absolute focus on the children's needs, and developing their confidence within an immensely supportive environment.
All classes will be planned in advance, but leaders will also take into account the immediate needs of the students and tailor sessions accordingly.
Once this first company has been established with at least two terms of regular classes, we will support that company to produce showcases, productions and engage with their local communities.
We will begin in the London Borough of Islington, but we aim to take this model into other communities and Boroughs in London once the first company is firmly established.
Any profit from running classes that remains after employing staff and paying for the rehearsal venue will be returned to a central account that will go to fund any showcases and productions by the company. They will also go towards running "taster sessions" in other boroughs.
